Season Five: 2023-2024

Lost Baggage is excited to be celebrating five years of theatre! To kick-off the season, we are starting with our annual Halloween-themed show. Start your celebration off with a bang at Chicago! Next, prepare to reminisce at our following production in November and December: Forgotten Treasures. This cabaret will be a collection of the highlight performances from our first four years. The show will have a nod to every past production we have done. Our fifth and final Valentine’s Cabaret will be a collection of love songs from rock musicals. Love On the Rocks will delve into the depths of different types of love while always delivering a steady beat! LBMT is proud to partner with Music In Greenboro for a second year to produce another hour-long matinée cabaret series. This year’s theme is “Lost and Found”, and the show will include the mini-musical, Run This Town. To end the season, we are producing the favourite broadway classic, Guys and Dolls. This golden-era show is a musical romantic comedy involving the unlikeliest of Manhattan pairings: a high-rolling gambler and a puritanical missionary, a showgirl dreaming of the straight-and-narrow and a crap game manager who is anything but. We hope to see you around Lost Baggage this year, whether it be on the stage, in the audience, or behind the scenes!

Chicago

Book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse | Music by John Kander | Lyrics by Fred Ebb

October 27-29, 2023 | Arts Court Theatre (2 Daly Avenue)

Evening Shows at 8:00pm | Doors at 7:30

Afternoon Shows at 2:00pm | Doors at 1:30

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap…until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune, and acquittal. This sharp-edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.

Chicago first opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre in New York City on June 3, 1975. The production, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, ran for 936 performances. On Nov 14, 1996, a revival of the show opened on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. It latered transferred to Shubert Theatre, and then to the Ambassador Theatre, where, more than two decades later, it continues to run, logging nearly 10,000 performances.

LBMT is excited to partner with Music in Greenboro to present another music theatre cabaret. This year’s theme is “Lost and Found”, and the show will feature show tunes by characters who are searching for something or someone, or who have lost something or someone important to them. The show will feature the ten minute musical Run This Town – a jazzy comedy about a gangster in the 1920s who is frustrated with his friends and accomplices, and wants to work with and learn from a pro. However, he soon realizes people aren’t always who they seem to be, and sometimes your friends are your best partners.

We will be looking for 9 performers to cast in this show. Each performer will have at least one solo or duet song, participate in two ensemble numbers, and in Run This Town. The show will run for approximately sixty minutes for two matinée performances at different locations in Orleans and South Keys.

Run This Town is a jazzy comedy about a 1920’s gangster named Big Al who is frustrated with his friends and accomplices, and wants to work with and learn from a pro. He laments his current friends and their botched crimes “RUN THIS TOWN.” He soon meets a mysterious stranger who promises him he can learn from his friend, a real pro “NOWHERE TO HIDE.” He is taken to a jazz club where the Hairdo Sisters greet him “THERE’S NOTHING SHADY GOING ON IN THIS JOINT.” He meets One-Eyed Pete, who isn’t as he seems “THE CONFESSION.” Al soon realizes that the people he idolized aren’t all they’ve portrayed to be- and sometimes you need to stick with your friends to make an honest living out of a life of crime “RUN THIS TOWN (REPRISE).”

Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950. It received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics and won a bevy of awards, including Tony Awards, Drama Desks and Oliviers. Frequently revived, the show has been done with numerous all-star casts, including productions/concerts featuring Ewan McGregor, Jane Krakowski, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Jessica Biel.

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler, Nathan Detroit, tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.
